The Soo Eagles are looking to snap their four game losing
streak this weekend when they travel to Flint to take on the Michigan
Warriors. The Eagles haven’t had the
opportunity to play Michigan yet this season, but this weekend opens up the
flood gates as they will see the Warriors six times in a month’s time starting
Friday. This weekend’s games will be
statements of what fans can expect from the teams this season. The Warriors currently have a 9-4-6 record
with 24 points and sit in 2nd place in the division. The Eagles have a 7-9-4 with 18 points and
sit in 5th place in the division.
The Eagles will still be down a few men, at least on Friday
night. Captain Ryan Urso is will be
serving the last of his five game suspension on Friday and should be expected
to be on the ice Saturday. Defensemen
Michael Caruso is still dealing with his shoulder injury and is out for an
undetermined amount of time. He is
undoubtedly missed out on the ice by his teammates and fans alike. Matt Menta is still dealing with his back
injury that has taken longer than expected to heal. Rest is about all Menta can do in hope to get
back on the ice as soon as possible.
Brad Pung will be making his debut back on the Perani Ice in
Flint this season. Pung was a part of the
Warriors team last season and made the switch to the Eagles before the start of
this season. Also worth noting are two
former Soo Eagles players who are now wearing Michigan Warrior jerseys, John
Nugent and Connor Lyons. Nugent played
for the Eagles last season but ended up dropping down to play out his last year
of midget major eligibility with Honeybaked U18 and develop. He was picked up by Michigan in the off
season and has since starting producing with them. Lyons played for the Soo Eagles in the
2011/2012 season, the Eagles last season of the NOJHL. Lyons has been praised for his impressive
skills with the Warriors since joining the team in 2012.
Tis that portion of the season when the roster starts to get
shaken up and no one is safe. The Eagles
have added a few NAHL players to their roster recently. Sandis Zolmanis, a 1994 forward who hails
from Riga Latvia, played with the Magicians for a few games before coming to
the team. In addition, the Eagles added
Matthew Montermurro, a 1994 defensemen who comes to the team from Coulee Region
and spent the majority of last season with Odessa. Also, the Eagles have another forward on the
roster, Evan Erickson, but he was no acquired via trades from another NAHL
team. He is a 1994 forward who comes
from Minnesota. As for releases, the
Eagles have finally released Anthony Saleh’s rights. Junior hockey is a business and as fans, we
have to roll with the punches and put our faith in our coaches in scouts.

hours down I75 can catch all the action on fasthockey.com
