Soo Eagles vs Port Huron Fighting Falcons Weekend Review

Article and Photo by: Chelsea Zalewski

Fired up, determined and ready to go is the way the team looked on Friday as they took the ice.  They skated hard and did not give up all game long.  The Eagles went up early in the first after a goal from Bruno Birzitis but had to battle back from a 2-1 deficit in order to tie up the game at two a piece in the second – the goal coming from Eagles veteran Mike Sabitini with just over 3 minutes left to play in the period.  The third period saw no goals sending the game into a five minute overtime.  Overtime was not enough for the teams though as the game ended in a shootout, the Eagles’ fourth already this season.  Both goalies looked solid, but it was defensemen Michael Caruso who put the puck passed Falcon’s goalie Milosek for the shootout victory.  Stars of the game were Mike Sabitini (3rd), Max Milosek (2nd), and Eagles goalie Colin Brennan (1st).  Brennan made 35 saves while Milosek made 39. Assists for the Eagles goals were Filip Winkler (1st), AJ Jarosz (2nd) and Michale Caruso (2nd).

On Saturday, the Eagles were looking for the weekend sweep of the first place team in the north. They came out strong but found themselves down 2 to 0 after two periods of physical play.  The Eagles game was brought back to life with an early third period goal by Jacob McDowell assisted by Mike Sabitini.  Despite being given new life the Eagles could not pull off the comeback win as they had on Friday, dropping the game in regulation 2 to 1.  The Eagles spent an unimpressive 26 minutes in the penalty box thanks to some very late game calls by the ref.  Stars of the game were Zach Badalamenti (3rd), Paige Skoog (2nd), and Alex Blankenburg (1st).  Skoog made 31 saves in the match while Blankenburg made 24.

All in all the weekend was a tough battle but to be able to beat the first place team is always an accomplishment.  After the weekend the Soo Eagles found themselves tied in third place with Springfield.  The Eagles will travel to Springfield this weekend for two games.  That weekend preview as well as the recent roster changes will be posted Thursday, October 10th.
