Tomahawks' Top Five Games of 2012-2013: Number 5

Each day this week we'll count down the top five games of this past season for the Johnstown Tomahawks. The list is only what we believe the best five games were, so if you have a different opinion, we'd love to hear about it. Comment below or you can leave a comment on our Facebook or Twitter page.

September 13th 2012
Day 2 of the NAHL Showcase
Kenai River 5 vs Johnstown 6 F/SO

The reason we selected this game is because this was the first win in franchise history, and it was won in a shootout.

Coming into the game the Tomahawks had a record of 0-2-1.

In net for the Tomahawks that night was Matthew McLaughlin. It would be the only game he'd play in for Johnstown, and he only lasted net for 30:55 minutes.

Both teams scored two in the first, two in the second, and one in the third, to force the overtime period, and ultimately the shootout.

1st Period:

Johnstown got on the board first as, Evan Hesse scored with the assist going to Jeff Bergh. 0:52

Kenia River would then score the next back-to-back goals, to give them a 2-1 lead, all still under ten minutes into the game.

At 7:55, Johnstown tied the game, via Jesse Kessler, assisted by Connor Wright.

2nd Period:

The second period saw the Tomahawks' fall behind again, this time by two. Kenai River's goals came from Zac Lazzaro and Albin Karlsson.

Just over four minutes later, the Tomahawks began their second come back of the game. At 12:45, JB Baker scored with assists coming from Kristaps Bazevics, and Evan Hasse. Then at 15:23, Cobi Smith-Mass scored a power play goal, assisted by Kristaps Bazevics.

Both teams would go into intermission tied at four.

3rd Period:

Cody Boyd would break the tie, almost halfway through the third period. The assists went to Codey Hansen, an Cody Bentzeld.

But the Tomahawks found the game tied yet again at 16:37 when Ryan Walker beat Chris Truehl, who came in relief for McLaughlin, turning away 19 of 20 shots.

The game would go to a shootout. Luckily, Youtube user, stannschool1, filmed the shootout and you can watch it below.

Three Stars of the Game:

3- Kenai River- Ryan Walker
2- Johnstown- Kristaps Bazevics
1- Johnstown- Cody Gylling

Kenai River out shot Johnstown 36-18.

Johnstown was 1 for 4 on the power play and Kenai River went 1 for 5.

This was Bazevics second two point game of the season with the Tomahawks' and would be his last. Later in the season he'd get (1) assists for Johnstown when they battle against Port Huron before he was traded to Wichita Falls for Corey Schafer.

This game, Hansen, got his first assist with the team, we would pick up one more, and net two goals before he was traded to Topeka on 11/13/2012.

This was Hasse's best game with Johnstown, as it was his only two point night for the Tomahawks. On 11/10/2012 he was traded to Brookings. With Brookings he recorded seven multi-point games, with his best came against Austin, where he scored four points (1 goal, 3 assists).

Check us out tomorrow when we take a look at the Tomahawks 4th best game of the season. Of course this count down is all leading up to the top game, which we'll reveal on Friday.
