Johnstown Tomahawks vs the Johnstown Chiefs

The Johnstown Tomahawks first season is almost in the books. It's been a memorable year for the Tomahawks and the city of Johnstown.  Johnstown had gone without a hockey team for  two years, except for the ten games each season the Wheeling Nailers played at the CCWM, Johnstown was ready to have a team to call their own.

Many people have compared this current team to the team that played in Johnstown from 1988 to 2010. Sure those teams were professional clubs and this is a junior team, tier two, but in my mind, the Tomahawks have been the far better team, not just on, but off the ice.

I was a season ticket holder for the Johnstown Chiefs during their last five seasons, and before that I made it out to almost every game that I could. Not only did I see as many games at home as possible, but I also made several road trips that took me places like, Dayton OH and Wheeling WV to watch the Chiefs.

This season I was able to see every Tomahawks home game (except for the Fresno series due to sickness) and went on the road to Flint Michigan in early January. I plan to close out the season catching at least one game vs Jamestown in a few weeks.

Watching both clubs as I have, I wondered how this team (the Tomahawks) and the former Chiefs' teams compared with each other.  We'll look at team related stats. We didn't cover the goals for and the goals against since the Tomahawks are way behind any Chiefs' team, simply because the Chiefs played more games per season than the Tomahawks do.

(note that the Tomahawks have 4 more games to play this season, all of which are on the road)

Attendance:

The Tomahawks finished this season with an average home attendance of 2528. This was the best year in attendance since the 2006-2007, that season the Johnstown Chiefs averaged 2589. Keep in mind that the Tomahawks played 28 home games this season, compared to the Chiefs 36. Before that season you'd have to go back to the 03-04 season where the Chiefs averaged 2551 fans per game. That season was the year the Chiefs went 45-20-7, which was their best season in franchise history.
